Asrani was born on 1 January 1941(Capricorn), Jaipur, India. His real name is Govardhan Asrani, popularly known simply as Asrani.He has spanned over 35 years in Bollywood.He belongs to a middle class Sindhi Family,his father came to Jaipur and opened a shop selling carpets. Though, Asrani had no interest in business, he wanted to become an actor.
Asrani has done his matriculation from Xaviers School and graduation from Rajasthan College, Jaipur. During his graduation, he worked as a voice over artist on All India Radio, Jaipur.From 1960 to 1962, Asrani began to learn acting from Acting Guru- Sahitya Kalbhai Thakkar. He came to Bombay in 1962 and began his hunt.In 1963, Hrishikesh Mukherjee advised him to learn acting professionally. He joined Film Institute in Poona from 1964-1966.
Asrani got his first break in a Gujrati movie. His first Hindi movie was Umang followed by Baawarchee. This movie opened the way for comic roles like Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke , Chala Murari Hero Banne, Chhoti si Baat and his most remarkable role as the Jailor in the movie Sholay.
Asrani was also appeared in the films- Chup Chup Ke, Hera Pheri, Deewane Hue Paagal and Hulchul. He has acted in over 300 films.
