Balraj Sahni

Balraj Sahni (1 May 1913–13 April 1973, (Taurus),was a noted Hindi film actor. He belonged to a Punjabi Khatri family from Bhera, his real name was Yudhishthir Sahni. Balraj Sahni was the brother of Bhisham Sahni who was famous actor, writer and playwright. He has done M.A in English from Lahore after that he went to Rawalpindi to join his family business.

Balraj Sahni has also done Bachelors in Hindi, followed by Masters in English from Punjab university. After completing his studies, he married Damayanti Sahni who was a heroine. Balraj Sahni has also worked with Mahatama Gandhi for a year. In the year 1939, he went to England to join B.B.C London's Hindi service as an announcer on Radio. He came back to India in 1943. He began his acting career with the plays of the IIPTA-Indian People's Theatre Association, his first movie was Insaaf(1946).

Balraj Sahni's most memorable movie was Kabuliwala, penned by Rabinmdra Nath Tagore. Some of his movies are Seema (1955), Sone Ki Chidiya (1958), Satta Bazar (1959) and Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan(1961). Balraj Sahni was a great writer,his early writings were in English, then he switched to Punjabi and became a renowned writer in Punjabi Literature.He wrote many short stories and poem.He has written his autobiography called 'Meri Filmi Aatmakatha'. In the year 1969, he was entitled with Padma Shri award.
